Question: Do you think religious addiction recovery programs just offer a substitute for people's addictive tendencies?

Whenever I hear people on the radio or TV talk about how Jesus solved their addition, it really sounds like they haven't lost that certain persona of addiction... Your thoughts? I'll be the first to admit that Jesus is better than heroine. SO12G: Do you have beer nuts?

Not just religious recovery programs. Almost every program substitutes fellowship for addiction. That's the whole point of group therapy. That said, I still think it's a better addiction than the original.

It seems like a load of brainwashing to me, but since believing in the ridiculousness of Jesus is more acceptable, folks buy into it. One bad habit after another, I guess. Think about it.

Solved their addition? Arithmetic help? Seriously, I see where you're coming from. And that would explain why many of them fall out of the faith after a few years... the high is gone, and they need to find a newer, better high. Sad, really.

Absolutely. An addict is an addict for life. Though they might not always be on drugs, they can become "addicted " to things like sex/ masturbation, caffeine, and other things not quite as bad as dope.

If someone has truly found the Lord, then thier addictions can be healed, TAke it from someone who both, my husband and I have laid in ICU, and are both sober today because God stopped us when nothing else could, not sickness, not seisures, not AA, not that I am against it, it just wasn't enough, I was stubbourn and wouldn't listen to anyone, God made me listen, and now I have alot of blessings because of it, when people have God, they are born again, and when a person accepts Jesus Christ into thier life, they turn from thier old self, which would include addictions, so yes God cures addictions.

It pretty much is a case of replacing an addiction for booze, weed, smack or whatever with an addiction to prayer. Now since prayer isn't directly harmful (unless they decide to forgo modern medicine for it) while the drugs are they probably are less likely to die than before they swapped addictions but they still have an addiction and still need help for it. Just that they won't admit it, nor can they be forced to get help in the way an alcoholic can.

People can become addicted to almost anything, including religion. Addiction to religion wont kill me in a car accident unless I am too busy trying to read all the bumper stickers on the car. I once saw a bumper sticker that said This Car is Powered by Jesus. I thought, hey if its cheaper than gas, sign me up.

There is no addiction in belief to God and religious belief. It is a faith to God. You are wrong to say that religion is addiction. jtm

I mean no disrespect to Christians by saying this... I simply need to see proof, and then I'll believe that Jesus can heal in general. I believe that a person with an addictive personality or an addiction prone brain can become addicted to religion, AA, or even Cheese Fries. In order to believe that they have been "cured " by Jesus, instead of using Jesus as an alternate addiction, I'd need to see some medical proof, such as brain scans. I use my belief in a higher power to help control my alcoholism- I won't ever say I'm cured, just that my alcoholism is "in remission ". For now.

I agree with you completely. They just substitute one addiction for another. Granted being addicted to religion is much better than drugs or alcohol, but the person will never be totally healthy until the reason for the addictive behavior is discovered and addressed.
