Question: Is a religion addiction in a way just as harmful and self destructive as a drug addiction?

Compare it to heroin; if a heroin addict is given a clean supply of heroin, sterile needles, has an adequate diet with adequate exercise, there’s no reason why the heroin addict won’t live well into his or her eighties, just bombed out every day of his or her existence. You know, clean heroin doesn’t slowly destroy any of the body’s organs like cigarettes and alcohol do. It’s a substance that is injected straight into the blood stream instead of being absorbed into the bloodstream via the lungs or digestive tract. This is similar to religion because religion doesn’t cause any physical harm to the body but it harms by reducing the potential to achieve. Like the heroin addict above, a religious person lives every day of their existence within a pleasant haze, chasing rainbows and butterflies that only they can see. But can you see how religion is just as harmful to individuals and society as drug addiction?

The everlasting life my God has given me -- overtakes any sensation any drug could give me :)

"Fake religion " is Deadly!! (True Christianity is "Power under Control ".) One should have a "Calm Delight " and kindness to others.

It is possible for it to be more than some might be able to handle, I also think that comes from what doctrine it is also.

There are much worse addictions than religion.

As long it is used as a means to an end... not vice versa

In Islam, my religion, there is no pleasant haze chasing butterflies only we can see. We face harsh reality. As in the Quran, whoever finds earth heaven, they are usually not to go to heaven. Plus its not harmful, people are being racist we have no choice but to stand up. Peace to all other religions ~Candy

How many religious fanatics have you heard of killing because 'god told them to'? now how many drug addicts have you heard of killing because the joint/ pill told them to? (i know they kill but most end up admitting it's because they wanted more drugs, or didn't get there fix etc) my answer to your question is, in my OPINION (remember the meaning of that word), religion is more destructive. oh and because my nana would abuse me, 'in the name of god' before she died when i was 6.

The majority of religious people do not live "every day of their existence within a pleasant haze, chasing rainbows and butterflies that only they can see ". For most people religion is the foundation their life is built on. It makes the life they live stronger and more stable. However, there is a small group of people who use religion like a drug. They use it to distance themselves from reality. There are people like this in every religion out there. Anything can be an addiction if someone is so obsessed with it that it interferes with a normal life. If it interferes with their relationships with family and friends, their job, the balance in their life. But I don't think there is any addiction that is as harmful as a drug addiction.

Have you ever wondered about the positives? TIME Magazine has. Look up it's edition of two or three weeks ago delving into the connection between faith and the body.

If you think that injecting "clean " heroin straight into your blood stream is not going to harm you and is less harmful than cigarettes or alcohol, then you know absolutely nothing about the effect of long term damage to the veins and the potential deadly side effects of injecting (even if using clean heroin). If you think drug addiction can be compared to religion, then you know absolutely nothing about religion. If you think that "religious " people live every day of their existence within a pleasant haze, chasing rainbows and butterflies that only they can see, then you are either deluded or possible not quite a full shilling. I don't know one single "religious " person who would fit that description. No, I cannot see any connection between religion and drugs.

Being addicted on a religion is not good if u understand it in a wrong way and kill everyone who doesnt believe in it like the terrorists but if u follow it in a rite way and levae everyone continue believing in their openion if they doeasnt wanna listen to u then thats okkkay.

Well I don't think there is a connection between religion and drug addiction. It is because no matter how clean the materials are being used during the heroin procedures, it can still produce harmful effects to the body. Furthermore, it doesn't matter if the person is into sports because using drugs is in fact unhealthy to the body. A person who believes in God has the virtue of "faith ", even though he/ she can't see his physical form. To put into simpler words, drug addiction is harmful, not religion.
