Does religion, like drug addiction, lead people into a life of corruption, deceit and violence?

Question: Does religion, like drug addiction, lead people into a life of corruption, deceit and violence?

(Posted by: Desiree on 2009-05-22 18:57:06)

Some of the most corrupt people on the planet are religious people. Some of the most active liars and deceivers of the public on the planet are religious people. Some of the most violent, sadistic and cruel people on the planet are religious people. I realize that these are all assertions and I have no evidence upon which to base them, but don’t you just feel that they’re the truth?

Pretty much. Rarely, religion can do good rather than harm, such as for recovering addicts in organizations like AA or NA. Many addicts need to rely on things outside themselves in order to get over their addiction, and religion is a popular crutch. In that sense, religion can sometimes help people better themselves. But that's about it.

Yes, if it's mixed with science and politics or inteferes with other peoples choices.

It's more likely that the most corrupt, deceitful, and violent people use religion as a shield, and those people are far more visible than those who treat religion (and other people) with respect.

Ok stop please?? you're ascribing the human condition to a specialized group. you're calling religious people sinners... brilliant! adam sinned and became a slave to sin, therefore a son of adam is a son of a slave and a son of a slave is still a slave! what if i said some of the most corrupt people on the planet are also politicians??? it is true either way you slice it. you and your loaded questions. thankfully they are loaded with non lethals, because i can personally say no, it isn't like drug addiction, it turns me off from drug addiction, and i can speak for such because i am according to you one of the most corrupt people on the planet, i've lied, i've cheated and hurt others, i've abused my own body... are you blameless?

The difference is that religious people think they are moral solely on the basis of their standing with their church

Just because people claim to be "religious " does not make them so. Their actions speak the truth. It also depends on what your idea or thoughts of being religious is. There are many different religions but only one true God. Even those that follow God still make mistakes and sin. The difference is the repentance that the person has.

These statistics would be because over 80% of the people in the world are religious. Of course some are going to be corrupt, but it's usually because of greed or thirst for power instead of religion.

I agree that a lot of those people claim to be religious so that they can con people, but claiming that you are religious doesn't mean that you are.

"Religion is an insult to human dignity. With or without it, you'd have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, it takes religion. "

Only crazy people who do all these killings and bombing shit. That has nothing to do with religion. Just stupidity.

That is stereotyping....I am a believer but im a very good person. I wish I didn't care about anything. I think i would be much happier if I was selfish but its just not in me to be that way.

Absolutely. And, no one can touch them because they did it in the name of their respective religions.

If your reasoning were correct (which it is not), then we would have to legalize religion and hand out free Bibles. That's what the Democratic party does.

Absolutely. Theism breeds 'truth'. Steve Alten-Julius Gabriel: Fear and religion; religion and fear. The two are historically entwined. The catalysts of most of the atrocities committed by man. Fear of evil fuels religion, religion fuels hatred, hatred fuels evil, and evil fuels fear among the masses. It is a diabolical cycle, and we have played into the Devil's hand. ~

You can substitute any class or group of people for religious and the statement would be just as true or false. corrupt, active liars, deceivers violent, sadistic and cruel people know no class, race, religion, national origin...they just are.

Yes, people sometimes need purpose for their life and can over react to what is right and wrong. don't let this interfere with your ability to know the truth and believe god wants you to live a happy and healthy life. they need more than you to be complete and over react to what god really wants. he is understanding to mortals and forgives our shortcomings. this is the best part of who he is. always remember he accepts them and you for who we are. don't let extreme behavior of others interfere with your relationship with god and his purpose for your life. he knows your needs as well as theirs.

Oh, Desiree...I am beginning to understand why you hate religion so much. You are at least partly right, actually...there are some very nasty people hiding behind the banner of reliigion. I don't think that these people are the way they are because of their religion...rather I'd say that they use the religion as both a hiding place, and a tool for their viciousness. Of course, there are nasty people who are not religious as well. Some of them may be on a church role somewhere, but that hardly counts. Heck, I belong to a health club...but I'm still a chubby li'l Gramma for all that. My name is on the books, but my body isn't in the gym. I'd be willing to bet that the proportion of really nasty people is pretty much the same in any group. They tend to stand out more in a religion like Christianity, because it is so obvious that they are not following the religion. You know me, I am a Christian (allbeit, not a perfect one). I am not a Christian because I think the faith is just bursting with wonderful, good, wholesome, loving people...all though I have met a few like that...but because I truly do believe in God, and because I am held by the great love of Jesus Christ. Wasn't it Ghandi who said something about liking our Christ but not our Christians...because, as he said, our Christians are so unlike our Christ? He was quite right, of course. But again, I'm not a Christian because I am following a person...I am a Christian because I am following Jesus Christ. And, Desiree, even though we've had our differences in this forum before, I do pray for you. May God rain His blessings down upon you, whether you believe in Him or not.
