Is it christian to try to control drug addiction with jail terms?

Question: Is it christian to try to control drug addiction with jail terms?

Shouldn't it be left to the caring professions without being a law and order issue? If there is Free Will there should be no Prohibition people decide what they want to do with their lives. Legalize all Drugs for the common and ethical good. The War on drugs is a failure. Drug profits fund terrorists including the Taliban who are beating us!!!!

I say we throw them all in jail and make them go cold turkey. the ones that survive are the ones that should have survived according to darwin.

Yes it should. The so-called "War On Drugs " is about creating a criminal underclass to frighten people into preferring oppressive laws and accept poor living and working conditions. There's no place for it in a Christian society.

Yep.The laws of the land should protect honest, hardworking citizens, but the laws of the land should be a terror to lawbreakers.

You are talking about a couple different things. If there are laws that are violated then a judge must determine what happens to the offender. Sometimes those things are regulated by the laws themselves (minimum and maximum sentencing for example). These things are out of Christian control unless they are politically active and campaign for some aspect of the cause. Treatment for addicts is certainly great. I was once a substance abuse case manager and counselor. The only chance for success is if the addict really wants help. I am sure Christians are all for this since the many treatment programs across the country are faith based. Laws are not only created to protect us from each other but to protect ourselves from ourselves. I know that seems crazy to some, but there are those who need a little help with self-regulation. Your phrase, "Legalize all drugs for the common and ethical good " is something I am having a hard time understanding. I guess it is the "all " word. A case might be made that something mj is little different than alcohol. But I'm not sure "all " is a good thing. "The war on drugs is a failure. " That can only really be known if we knew what things would be like with legalization. Would you support government control of all narcotics sold on the open market, would you require prescriptions, or just sell them at the grocery store for who ever wants them, and give out free scratch off tickets with each purchase?

Drugs KILL people. alcohol is a drug too and look at the harm it dose and that is a legal drug , lots of users,it breaks up families friendship's. there are programs to help such people if they want help, AA & NA. I AM A MEMBER lots of people need help but they must want the help first .

Hi , This is an very great question! Depending on what the drug does to an individual. If it is an serious drug that's very addictive and can create abuse on ones own self let alone on other human being's ;It may call for such an person to serve time for the abuses they've committed as well get treatment hopefully under the right kind of care to get their lives back to normal. Even Alcohol is the same as it can be miss used by the person and thus hert others as well their own selves. I have had severe injuries as an soldier and went without any pain Relief for well over or about 15 years. I didn't want to suffer those injuries for one thing clearly ! Yet i suffered. I fought as much I could from the suffering it created in me and did an fairly good job. Then as it got worse I went in for help and said look this is effecting my loved ones so dear and precious to me. I was placed on Tylenol #3 120 milligrams per day. Then things got better ! Much better !! The doctors Sense then kept an watch on me all those years to see how well i was doing . They wouldn't raise up the amount of pain killer and I found out if they had it not only could have hert me (My body the liver & so fourth) But as well I could have be gain having serious addiction issues and thus hert my loved ones. If humans Christan or non Christan use drugs so freely and get out of control without any help along the way they can hert themselves as well others just like alcohol does to many thousands of human being's and their loved ones also suffer from such. Their are over the counter drugs that can be abused and cause damages too! Truly life is very dear & precious and their are enough trials we have to learn from as is. It is true God gives us the freedom to choose right from wrong ( Negative Vs: Positive) With drugs at loose their would be so much suffering it could become like the swine flu or other such thing's. Yes it is important to be under medical care and some control system that Truly cares when we need help from our bodies suffering from injuries. Take an Good look at history : If drugs were not regulated as they are we would see things again like what Japan war machine did to the Korean People & the Chinese peoples and opium was used against them as an form to weaken these people's so they could take over their nations ! SERIOUSLY SPEAKING. When drugs are so power-full as such it cry's out from those whom have suffered its miss-use. When one begins to use it it seems to help; However its so power full and addictive that the person needs more and more until they have no control over such. This has been real well known in America the street drugs that are illegal to buy and use at will and then it be gain to upset the balances of Goodness in American lives. Hemp if grown in large enough quantities and if in the wrong hands could be chemically altered into an drug they used to give to dying Cancer patients and it is very dangerous. Hemp is an more simple drug then most others. It can be relaxing and medicinal uses. It also slows down an part of the brain cells that makes an person lazy and fall asleep at the wheel specially at night and cause accidents. It can be an good thing pain meds if used properly and under dr's good care. If we changed the laws and made it free choice to do as we wish many will suffer and many will die which case could bring down population explosion if one so wants it bad enough to try and change the rules. Some country's did such and it did just that and thus what survived learned to be careful with said choices. Some have said we live once why not enjoy it and party hardy; When the time comes though for these type thinkers & doers they find themselves gasping for their precious lives and some don't even have any say about what they chose. Humbly & Sincerely,

It used to be "Christian " to torture anyone who violated their "belief system ". The Spanish Inquisition and the Salem Witch trials come to mind. Until such time as "we " develop an effective means to assist drug addicts, we must isolate such "behaviours " to ensure basic freedoms. Many drug addicts in an effort to "feed their addiction " ignore and violate the basic rights of those not addicted. Many innocent people have died as a result. To that there MUST be a form of recompense for the damage caused. (Including the damage caused by the British in using opiates to control the Chinese population in the late 19th and 20th centuries.) History is replete with drugs and alcohol being used a "control " mechanism by "rulers and leaders " on it's populations and this must cease entirely for "legalization " to occur. Jails are not the answer as this only perpetuates even worse behaviours upon society. There is a workable system available in the form of drug detoxification and "holodynamics " but this has yet to be utilized by "mainstream " thought. Perhaps it's time the "Trilateral Commission " implemented this humanitarian approach. It's unfortunate that the "Trilateral Commission " is overwrought with "right wing " thinkers, whose children are becoming the "addicts ". Philosophy takes precedence over "religious " thought.

No God has given everyone Free Will. Prohibition creates super prized commodities that attract the worst of society for its traffic. It's Our Laws Stupid who has created the worst of the drug violence that afflicts our cities. Terrorists and maffiosi are the only winners on the War on Drugs it's time to let society self adjust the same as with abortion or homosexuality.
