Question: Is dedicating ones life to religion worse than dedicating ones life to drug addiction?
(Posted by: Desiree on 2010-02-24 14:58:01)
Drug addiction typically only causes damage to one person’s life – the drug addict. But religion causes damage to not just the religion addict but to almost everyone they contact throughout their life, especially their children, right? So in most cases, it would be better for humanity if religious people lived their lives in a drug induced haze rather than to have them screwing up their children’s minds, spreading their ridiculous beliefs to other people and voting for corrupt politicians who use religion to gain power, right? |

No. Even _I_ think it's better to be a Christian than a drug addict. And that's saying something. |

Where did you hear this at? Drug addiction affects a person and their whole family and friends. It can cause babies to be born with drug addictions. It could also cause babies to be deformed. It can make the person turn to a life of crime to pay for their drug habit. And if you take too much you can die from an overdose. |

Religion betters one's community, especially one's that teach love and forgiveness. Drug addiction affects more people than you give credit for, and is responsible for most criminal activity. Whether it be someone robbing a store for drug money, or even murder. Your attitude towards religion, disappoints me. Even if you do not believe in a higher power, why not value a theology's morals and values. |

If drug addiction is the case, religion would probably be better. |

This is why the pharmaceutical companies need to develop a cure for religion. |

Drug addicts do harm others, they give birth to babies who are addicted to crack/ heroin who then suffer withdrawals. They hurt others by stealing to gain their fixes or shooting at rivals as most are in a gang. This is still America, right? which means we have the right to freedom of worship according to our constitution. |

Drug addiction has a relatively immediate, negative effect on the person and people surrounding them. Religion on the other hand, has long-term, negative effects on the society which often are difficult to trace back to the original cause. I'd say drug addiction is a bit worse. |

People need to understand that there is a difference between "religion " and a "relationship with God. " God did not create religion--it is man-made. It doesn't mean that all religions are completely evil, but we have to understand that they are systems created by people. There are religious systems that are detrimental to our lives, as well as our salvation. And if we dedicate our lives to a religion, instead of to God, then we are in trouble. Don't do drugs, kids! |

Your wrong in about every way possible Desiree. 1) It is a mistake to think drug addiction only affects the addict. Even a minute consideration of that point reveals that the addict may steal from family or others to support their habit. They may need addict others to pay for their habit. And they are inviting criminal organisations into their neighbourhood to practise their trade. 2) And the truth is any ideology if taken to the extreme or practised by extreme individuals can have a negative impact. and I hate to break it to you this doesn't exclude atheists. |

"But religion causes damage to not just the religion addict but to almost everyone they contact throughout their life, especially their children, right? " As usual, Desiree, you toss out these great big grand statements as if they were fact, and you offer not one shred of evidence in support. What *is* proven is the fact that a drug addict affects a whole lot more than just himself. Just ask the families of addicts who suffer as they watch their loved one consumed by the need for drugs to the exclusion of all else. Ask the kids who are neglected, abused, and starved while their parents spend all their money for drugs. Go talk to the parents who've buried children that have died from overdoses or the innocents who've been caught in the gunfire of a drug-related turf war. Then take a look at the hospitals, orphanages, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, battered women's shelters, and all the other organizations supported and run by churches. And you think a drug addict is a better person than someone who gives their time, money, and love to helping others? You've made some pretty ridiculous claims before in your relentless hatred of religion, but this one tops the list. |

Your own response to your question is so far from the truth.. For one you should dedicate your life unto the Creator ( God Almighty) not a religion..You read the bible ( preferably king James version) to learn God Almighty's will for your life..The truth ( God's word) gives you the direction you need for fullfillment of your life..The word of God teaches us " What is it to gain the world, only to lose your soul "..If you donot read your bible and establish a personal relationship with God Almighty you will remain lost out here..You willnot recieve the peace, your soul desires..Read my profile if you have any additional question.. I see what you are saying, but drugs can hurt a lot of people also. Either one misused can be bad. |

Any from of addiction be it to drugs or an ideology all follow the dopaminergic pathway. In a nutshell whatever it is, triggers increased levels of dopamin a chemical in the brain which brings pleasure. The brain likes and will like to see it happen again. With drugs you go craving for more drugs, with religious fanaticism, you go off the deep end. This results in an imbalance of your system screwing you up. Both drugs and religion are two different things but stimulate the same pathway. Most people will say religion is better, but the fact is the if you are far gone in either, it takes a lot to get the person back to base line |
