Question: How come fat people are ridiculed more than even alcoholics, drug addicts, and homeless people?

I feel like people have so much more disdain and anger toward overweight people more than anyone else. Why the anger? People always say "it's not healthy " but the people who say it couldn't care less about that person's well being... I can understand the disdain but why the anger? why the strong disgust and angry emotion over it?

They are easy to tell: it's much easier to know a fat person than an Alcoholic or a drug addict.

It comes from the arrogance of people who think things that aren't aesthically pleasing to them shouldn't exist. Anybody who is overly critical of overweight people is insecure (and possibly obsessive) about their own weight. There is a difference between being fat and being morbidly obese though, just like there is a difference between somebody who has a glass of bourbon every night and someone who needs a dialysis machine.

I was overweight by 30 pounds 2 years ago because I was depressed and suicidal. It's an addiction and most people don't realize that,I only lost so much weight because I smoked and became bulimic.I had people telling me I look great even after I told them how I did it,that's when I realized people don't give a shit,as long as everything looks good on the outside that's all that matters. If you look happy and feel like shit, who cares. If you look like you have a good family but you really don't,who cares,It's all about the exterior in our society.

It's not fat people that bother me... it's the super morbidly obese people who have eaten themselves to being so fat that they can't do for themselves. Then they claim they are addicted to food??? Aren't ALL humans naturally addicted to food...

No, people have more hatred for drug addicts and alcoholics more than obese people.

If my calculations are correct, people feel they have to choose people different than themselves to bash on, normally the bimbos with bleach blonde hair and fake tans

Drug addiction and alcoholism... Even addicts that abuse and neglect their children... Is seen as a "Disease " while being overweight is seen as being "Lazy " or "Stupid, even though most cases of obesity are based in the same chemical and brain responses as that of the alcoholic or drug addict. People would rather make fun of someone than to actually look in to the research behind what is actually wrong with the person. Remember... Now that Race, Gender, and Sexuality are covered by law, you can only ridicule people that can't defend themselves no matter how much they insist they eat a healthy diet and exercise yet don't lose weight. ❀ Overeaters and Drug Abusers Share Addictive Brain Chemistry livescience.com/ health/ 091109-diet-drink-brain.html By Devin Powell, Inside Science News Service posted: 09 November 2009 03:30pm ❀ The Skinny on Fat: Is Obesity in Our Genes? scientificamerican.com/ blog/ post.cfm?id= the-skinny-on-fat-is-obesity-in-our-2008-12-15 Researchers have identified six genes that may play a role in our appetite and, as a result, in whether we're plump or thin. They report in Nature Genetics that the genes appear to affect brain activity that controls how much we eat, indicating that obesity, at least in part, may stem from behavior passed on from one generation to the next. So far, scientists have identified at least 10 genes associated with BMI, according to Hirschhorn, who says there are probably "hundreds of genes and certainly many genetic variants to be found " that may affect whether we're hefty or trim. ❀ NOVA Science Now - Topic: Obesity pbs.org/ wgbh/ nova/ sciencenow/ 3313/ 03.html Watch the episode: pbs.org/ wgbh/ nova/ sciencenow/ video/ 3313/ w03-220.html Ask The Expert: pbs.org/ wgbh/ nova/ sciencenow/ 3313/ 03-ask.html Q: I was fascinated by last night's NOVA scienceNOW segment about obesity, particularly the part about the brain in obese people not having the receptor sites for leptin. This helps explain a situation in my own life. A: Regarding your first question, leptin levels fall after weight loss, and low leptin levels provide a powerful stimulus to feel hungry. It is highly likely that it is reduction in leptin that contributes significantly to the hunger you describe. While it is also possible that weight loss could also alter receptor amounts or function, this has not been shown. Regarding your second point, conscious control of food intake can lead to weight loss, but over the long term this is not effective for most people. The ability to maintain weight loss is a result of a battle of sorts between one's level of conscious motivation and the biologic (unconscious) drive to eat more and regain the lost weight encoded by leptin. Leptin levels fall after weight loss, and low leptin levels provide a powerful stimulus to feel hungry. Clearly the power of this biologic drive and the power of conscious motivation will differ among people. However, the power of the biologic drive is underestimated by most people, and for most individuals biology trumps motivation at least over the long term. Ultimately, we would like to understand where the neural circuitry controlling conscious motivation is located and how this circuitry interacts with the unconscious neural circuits that encode the drive to eat. ❀ NOVA Science Now - Topic: The Epigenome: pbs.org/ wgbh/ nova/ sciencenow/ 3411/ 02.html Streaming: video.google.com/ videosearch?q= The+ Ghost+ in+ your+ Genes &emb= 0 &aq= f# ❀ Obesity linked to grandparental diet nature.com/ news/ 2008/ 081120/ full/ news.2008.1240.html ❀ Pregnant Moms Who Chew Fat Pass On Habit scientificamerican.com/ podcast/ episode.cfm?id= pregnant-moms-who-chew-fat-pass-on-08-11-13 A study in rats finds that moms fed a high-fat diet during pregnancy had pups with more brain cells devoted to increasing appetite. I cannot look at anyone and immediately conclude he/ she is an alcoholic, drug addict or homeless. I can, however, immediately conclude whether or not a person is fat. What pisses most people off (me included) is that fat people want to have special consideration to the point of being recognized as "disabled. " That means they want to be able to park in designated handicapped spots. Insane. Fatty parking should be the FARTHEST from any entrance. They want scooters so as to not have to walk. Okay, here's your pedal-powered scooter. They want their insurance to pay for their health concerns. Self-inflicted maladies means you pay out of pocket. Like alcoholics, drug addicts and , yes, even many a homeless person, fatties in the end have one person to blame for their condition: Themselves. The BS excuses for obesity are just that. People get fat for one reason: Consuming more food (fuel) than they expend. Such gluttony is a readily identifiable. It makes fatties easy targets.

It's because many times drugs just consume you and you can't stop.. Food is different. Like the both are used to make them feel good but food you can control. Like I mean, most people can control it. Most people don't even know what it's like to be a drug addict so they just feel bad for them or just think... that sucks they made the wrong decisions which is true. And alcohol, most people can relate to alcoholics because they understand how good alcohol is. Unlike food, which most people can't understand why the hell someone would do that to themselves. It's pretty much because obese people look gross, normal people just can't understand why the person is doing that to themselves and therefor is disgusted at how they can't control themselves. And I also agree with a lot of what the guy above me said... how they want all this stuff to help them like scooters and handicap parking... p p please!
