Christians, if you had a choice would you rather help a disadvantaged child or a drug addict?

Question: Christians, if you had a choice would you rather help a disadvantaged child or a drug addict?

I just mentioned to my friend that I have more compassion for disadvantaged or abused children than I do for drug addicts and the homeless. Then she talked my ear off about how that compassion is exactly what is needed to get people off the streets...etc. Like she was trying to change my mind. But I feel that some children are never even given a chance to thrive while adults on the street have just made bad choices. Or they ARE they are the abused children who weren't helped and grew up to live on the street. I didn't quite appreciate the third degree she gave me. Was I off base? So, most people are saying that both need help (I agree), but it's not wrong to have more compassion on one group of people than for another. Whew ;) Some people are saying not to turn my back on someone truely in need or withhold help. I'm not saying that I am unwilling to help homeless addicts, but that I simply don't feel for them like I do for children. I think that we, as a society, should especially try to protect our children.

Not a christian, but I'd help a child over some dipsh1t who put himself where he's at any day.

I'd help a child over a drug addict.

Well i agree with you..disadvantaged children don't ask to be put in that situation as opposed to a drug addict that makes a conscious decision to do what they do.

People say pervention is better than cure but if i could i would help both, if not i would help the child.

Well, I will pray to our Father that you get to view things from the drug addicts point of view.

I don't think you were off base. I think all disadvantaged children need help in whatever way we can help them. As far as the drug addicts they need help too but honestly if I had to pick one it would be the kid. If I could help them both that is what I would try to do.

I will probably be get thumbs down for this but i would rather help drug addicts because they are in pain and are digging themselves an early grave which is tragic. i say this because drugs are becoming more and more popular with the younger generation lately.

I would like to help both but if I had to choose one, it would be the abused or disabled child because they hadn't gotten a fair chance at life yet.

I think we need to have a certain degree of compassion for everyone, but God gives each of us certain burdens, and that's how things get done. If you have a burden for disadvantaged or abused children, then through the Holy Spirit, you can put that burden to use by helping them and showing them the love of Christ.

I kind of agree with you, how children are helpless and everything, but the homeless and children are equally in need, and we need to look past their sin, and try to help them recover.

I do have a choice. I would help the drug addicts because I'd be more effective at that. God gives every individual unique talents. It's up to us to figure out what they are so that we can carry out God's will as efficiently as possible.

I think...though I'm not really Christian...I'd rather help the abused/ disadvantaged children because they still have hope for a better future/ life because they are still young. With the drug addicts and the homeless, it would be a lot of work to get them back into school (if they hadn't gone already) and get a job.

Compassion is a Christian virtue. Different people are moved by different causes and we all feel the cause we are most sensitive to is the most important. Be happy that there are many different people with many different passionate causes that they support.

Child, because they don't really make the decision! If they are in foster homes, an orphanage, or homeless; it's not REALLY their fault. It is the parents, unlike drug addicts, they decide whether to do drugs, or not!

The child. The druggy already had their chance. (I'm a Jew, sorry)

I would try to help both but not give the drug addict money. I would buy them food and clothing but no cash.

Well, if you are saying i can't help them both and i have to choose: i would help an abused child over a drug addict, yes. your friend was probably just trying to get you to see both sides. who knows that the drug abuser was not once an abused child who never received any help. everyone needs a helping hand now and then.

I would go with the disadvantage child. Especially if it was involving money. I wouldn't give money to a bum on the street because odds are they would spend it on drugs or booze. To make changes for future generations I believe we need to start with children so It would have to be helping children over a drug addict.

The simple fact is that true compassion knows no natural barriers....all persons in need are deserving of compassion........pain is common to all living things.........

I don't think there is anything wrong with your choice, but I do think there is something wrong with thinking all drug addicts are where they are because of bad choices. What are the circumstances of their addiciton? Did their parents get them addicted? I know of parents who let their kids drink and smoke dope when they were small. Was it a spouse who introduced them to shooting up? You do know, I hope, that their is a difference in physical addiction and emotional addiction? Beating addiction is very difficult. Many people who truly want to get off drugs can't seem to fight the emotional addiction. No, I don't have much compassion for those who are their because of their own bad choices, but I don't judge them all the same. I would have to know the details.
